Creating a new e-commerce team

Following a consolidation of their UK, Belgian and Scandinavian airline businesses as well as the acquisition of the Condor brand to create Thomas Cook Airlines, we were tasked with supporting them in the creation of their central ecommerce team. This significant business turns over in excess of £3bn a year and delivers a robust contribution to the profit of the overall group. A key part of their online transformation strategy is to significantly increase the volume of their ancillary sales owing to the extreme competitive pressures exerted on ticket prices.

We were tasked with finding a Group Head of Digital Experience, responsible for the Product and UX teams as well as a Group Head of Online Commercial, responsible for commercial strategy and online trading. For both appointments, we naturally searched for candidates with a track record of success in their fields although we also placed particular focus in our assessments on international experience and stakeholder management skills. Given that the business has significant operations in 13 markets, an understanding of different working environments was critical.

For both appointments, we assessed 100-130 individuals with pan-European experience within Retail/Ecommerce and presented out shortlist within 4 weeks of commission. Thomas Cook appointed a brilliant hire, previously Head of Experience Design at Tesco PLC to lead their Product and UX team and their new Group Head of Online Commercial will be announced shortly.
